RemainsTwo levels, one 15 m (estimated) above the other with stopes connecting them. Tailings heaps. Vestigial remains of a small shelter against the hillside. Remains of a substantial walled structure (no indication of roof) immediately in front of lower level. (May 2002)

The 1882 6" map [OS 1st edn: XI NE] shows “Manganese Works (Disused)“ at this location.

The location given above is the site of the levels and tailings heaps and agrees with that given by Wilkinson [2003: 14638] for a manganese mine of this name (presumably based on the map evidence mentioned above. [GAT SMR: 20766] gives the location as SH637415 and categorises it as “manganese levels”. Wilkinson [2003: 12240] refers to SH637415 as a lead mine (on the Bwlch-y-plwm lode?) with the same name.

[Richards 1991: 115] states that there is a report of Hafod Boeth being a slate operation in the 1860s, but that there is no sign of remains of slate working. (He gives the location as SH638418.) He concludes that the report is due to confusion between this site and the Hafod Uchaf slate working approximately 2km north of this location.
