Oct 1828 to Oct 1829: Richard Williams, Ralltgoch (Merioneth) mines, sold 4t 16c (4.8t) manganese at £5 per ton and 9t at £4; freight 18s (£.90) per ton, royalty 1/10 (£.09) per ton [PRO LRRO: 5/32].
This mine may have been on the scarp overlooking Llynnau Gamalt (Crown land). There are traces of lead mining there [Lewis 2002]. Alternatively, Ramsay [1866: 58] refers to a fault running north from Ffynnon Eiddew (presumably Ffynnon Eidda, SH762437) forming “a broad lode, chiefly filled with quartz and a kind of hard cherty matter” which in places had been worked for manganese. Ramsey described the workings as “well seen” near Hafod-y-wededd (?Hafodyredwydd SH765458) but said that he was not aware of the lode being worked profitably for “many years”. The 1901 6" map [OS 2nd edn: Caernarfonshire XXIX SE] shows “levels” at SH76444592 which may be the workings referred to. (This location is in Caernarfonshire.)
